Can someone please guide me through what external solid state drive I should get for my mid-2011 27-inch iMac. It's starting to get sluggish - I have 480GB free on a 1TB drive (3.1 GHZ i5 with 12GB ram) running on El Capitan. There seems to be so much conflicting articles on what SSD works and what doesn't. I have an iMac 21.5' Late 2013 that has slowed down quite a bit since I got it a couple years ago. It's running macOS Sierra, has a 2.9GHz Intel i5 processor and 8GB RAM.
Get google browser. I tend to use it most for video and photo editing so speed is important. I also have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 which I opened up and replaced my hard drive for an SSD earlier this year and it was like getting a brand new computer, so I'd like to do the same for my iMac, but I daren't risk taking it apart.

If I were to get an SSD and boot off it externally, would it work just as well? From what I've gathered, connecting your SSD externally isn't as good as internally, though would the speed be improved enough to make it worth it?
